Black Notley.
A proper old village a mile and a half south of Braintree, with a Norman church, a medieval hall and larger plots that rarely come up.
Black Notley is the real thing: a parish first written down more than a thousand years ago, with a twelfth-century church and a fifteenth-century hall still standing a short walk apart. It sits between Braintree and the open farmland running down towards Witham, and most of the parish is still fields.
Newer homes came when the old Black Notley Hospital site was redeveloped at the start of the 2000s, so the village now offers two quite different markets: period and one-off detached houses along the old roads, and a well-kept modern estate that feeds the family market.
